Jonathan “Yoni” Dauber, an administrator at Astoria Place, agrees that offering specialized care to residents makes a difference. Twenty of Astoria Place’s residents are Chinese; another 20 are Russian. The nursing and rehabilitation home, which offers 164 licensed beds, keeps doctors and social workers on hand who speak Russian, Cantonese and Mandarin. Astoria Place also celebrates traditional holidays: for Russia, Defender of the Fatherland Day, which acknowledges the country’s drafted male soldiers, and International Women’s Day, and for China, Mid-Autumn Festival and Chinese New Year. This past Mid-Autumn Fest, staff dressed in traditional Chinese outfits and performed a dance for residents.
